Ginkgo has been a part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. The leaves were used to treat brain and circulatory problems and respiratory conditions. Ginkgo nuts were used for cough, fever, diarrhea, toothaches, and even gonorrhea. It’s now sold mostly as a supplement for memory support or brain health

Cognitive function and memory
Ginkgo biloba is thought to improve memory, focus, and overall cognitive function by enhancing blood flow to the brain, which in turn ensures adequate oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells.
While some studies have indicated improvements in cognitive function for those with mild dementia, particularly with long-term use (over 24 weeks) and appropriate dosages (240 mg/day), larger-scale studies like the GEM study found it ineffective in preventing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease in older adults.
Some smaller studies also suggest potential benefits in improving cognitive performance in individuals recovering from mild to moderate ischemic stroke when used in conjunction with conventional treatments.
2. Circulation and heart health
Ginkgo biloba may promote better blood flow throughout the body by dilating blood vessels and potentially reducing blood viscosity, which in turn can contribute to cardiovascular health.
Some research suggests it may increase coronary blood flow in patients with coronary artery disease and possibly improve endothelium-dependent vasodilation.
However, some studies, such as the GEM study, did not find strong evidence supporting the use of Ginkgo biloba for reducing the incidence of cardiovascular events or mortality.
3. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Ginkgo biloba is rich in flavonoids and terpenoids, compounds recognized for their potent antioxidant effects, which may help combat cellular damage caused by free radicals.
It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties, potentially reducing inflammation associated with various diseases and conditions, including some respiratory illnesses like asthma and COPD
Other potential benefits
Anxiety and Depression: Some studies have suggested potential benefits as an adjunctive treatment for depression and anxiety, though further research is needed.
Glaucoma: Some research indicates that ginkgo may increase ocular blood flow in individuals with glaucoma, potentially slowing the progression of visual field loss, but more research is required.
Tardive Dyskinesia: A randomized control trial suggested that Ginkgo biloba may help reduce symptoms of tardive dyskinesia in patients with chronic schizophrenia.
Vertigo: Some studies show that Ginkgo biloba may help in reducing the intensity, frequency and duration of vertigo
