Potential benefits
While evidence is inconclusive and research is ongoing, yohimbe extract has been traditionally and commercially promoted for several uses:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED): The bark of the Corynanthe yohimbe tree has a long history of use as an aphrodisiac and for sexual performance. Yohimbine is believed to help by increasing blood flow and nerve impulses to sexual organs. In Western medicine, a prescription drug called yohimbine hydrochloride was historically used for ED, but newer, safer drugs are more common now.
- Weight loss and fat reduction: The yohimbine in the extract can block alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in fat cells. In theory, this can lead to increased fat loss and is often marketed toward athletes and bodybuilders. Some human trials show modest effects, but others are conflicting.
- Athletic performance: The stimulant effects of yohimbine may enhance athletic performance in both aerobic and anaerobic exercise by increasing adrenaline and blood flow. It may also increase motivation and alertness.
- Other traditional uses: Historically, the bark was used in traditional West African medicine for conditions including fever, cough, and leprosy.
