Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum:
Symptoms
Syphilis can have different signs and symptoms depending on the stage of the infection. The primary stage often includes a single chancre, but there may be multiple sores. A rash can appear on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, chest, stomach, pelvis, or back. The rash may be red or reddish-brown in colour and feel rough to the touch. Other symptoms include fever, enlarged glands in the armpits and groin, hair loss, and headaches.
Transmission
Syphilis can be transmitted through:
Oral, vaginal, and anal sex
Pregnancy
Blood transfusion
