Viola odorata L., commonly known as sweet violet, belongs to the family Violaceae. It is called Banafshe in Farsi language and is found in the northern areas such as Alamut region. In ITM, it has been used to treat insomnia, cough, fever, common cold, and headache.

Viola odorata L. is a low-growing perennial with a stout rootstock found in hedgerows, rough land and margins of woodlands. It is native to Europe south of the Alps and west into France, but has naturalized in more northern areas because of widespread cultivation (Marcussen 2006).
